In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), IFAW veterinarian, Dr. Sarah Sharp, chronicles in this video essay, the success of IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue & Research (MMRR) program under the legacy of the MMPA. Based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, IFAW's MMRR team serves as the first line of defense for marine mammals in distress along 700 miles of coastline. For the past 24 years, we have responded to nearly 6,500 marine mammals of over 20 different species. Whether it’s developing innovative rescue techniques for stranded marine mammals or advancing critical research on the health of these animals and their populations, we are pushing the boundaries of animal welfare and conservation. All of our achievements and success would have not been possible if not for the passing of the Marine Mammal Protection Act. This historic legislation empowered IFAW’s MMRR program to become the global leader in marine mammal stranding response that it is today.
