A quick explanation of the molecular geometry of ClO3- including a description of the ClO3- bond angles. Looking at the ClO3- Lewis structure we can see that there are three atoms attached to the central Chlorine (Cl) atom as well as a lone pair of electrons. Based on VSEPR Theory (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory) the electron clouds on atoms and lone pair of electrons around the Cl will repel each other. As a result they will be pushed apart giving the ClO3- molecule a trigonal pyramidal geometry or shape. The ClO3- bond angle will be about 109 degrees (actually closer to 107 in this case) since it has a trigonal pyramidal molecular geometry.
