Close-up skinhead STORYLINE: Several dozen skinheads and other extreme nationalists gathered in downtown Moscow on Sunday to hold a sanctioned rally "in defense of Russian people". The rally was permitted by the city authorities despite Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov's vow not to allow the nationalists to spread their views. Police kept a low profile and no arrests were made. Recently Russia has been experiencing a sharp increase in nationalist fervour. Racially motivated attacks, particularly against dark-skinned people from the Northern Caucasus as well as blacks, are on the rise. On April 21, in what appears to be a well coordinated action, several hundred skinheads attacked a market in a Moscow suburb, beating vendors of Northern Caucasus origin and damaging property. Moscow police subsequently arrested the man who is thought to be behind the market pogrom and promised not to allow a spread of racist propaganda in the future. But extreme nationalists still have the right of expression in the Russian capital and at Sunday's rally their message seemed to reach the ears of at least some Muscovites.
