National Register visit 148: Christian Science Society. By the time this Avalon church was built in 1929, Santa Catalina Island had changed owners at least four times in 40 years and suffered a massive fire in 1915 that gutted about half of the buildings in Avalon. All these setbacks to its development resulted in a mishmash of architectural styles and eras. Catalina’s new owner, chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr., wanted to unify Avalon’s look and feel. He found just what he was searching for in the Christian Science Society’s new church and meeting space. Hans Wallner of the architectural firm Webber & Spaulding (same firm behind the iconic Catalina Casino) designed it in the Spanish colonial revival style, an aesthetic that would be employed for Avalon’s municipal buildings, walkways, businesses and benches for the next half century. The Christian Scientists of Avalon held weekly services here for 60+ years, until it shut down in the early ‘90s due to dwindling membership. It was renamed “Overlook Hall” after a new owner bought it and turned it into an event space in 2011, and a couple years ago it permanently closed. No word on what’s next for this historic building.
