5 Things Colombians Hate About Foreigners in Medellín (Avoid These Mistakes!) Hello, Mochar Medellín. In this video, I asked Colombian and Venezuelan friends living in Colombia, plus many acquaintances on Instagram, what really annoys them about foreigners. Their answers were extremely similar, and it’s eye-opening. Here’s what you need to avoid as a guest in Colombia: 1. Poor personal hygiene and body odor – Take a shower, wash your clothes daily, and wear cologne. Just because you can’t smell yourself doesn’t mean others can’t. Colombians care about cleanliness. 2. Inappropriate clothing – Locals dislike foreigners wearing shorts or flip-flops outside of exercise. Even casual t-shirts should be neat. Colombians prefer presentable outfits, whether for business or daily life. 3. Disrespecting property – Don’t slam doors or treat cars and homes carelessly. Small gestures, like gently closing a car door, show respect. 4. Attitude of superiority – Acting entitled, flaunting money, or thinking you’re better than locals is strongly disliked. Treat everyone with respect, as a guest in their country. 5. Ignoring cultural norms – Understand Colombian customs, manners, and etiquette. Being curious, humble, and respectful goes a long way in building friendships and enjoying your stay. Even if your Spanish isn’t perfect, respect, curiosity, and humility will help you thrive in Medellín.
