And now it’s time for another Wellness 101 – How to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth Without Destroying Your Waistline…presented by St. Luke’s University Health Network. For many of us, combating sweet tooth cravings is an everyday occurrence. That sweet, sweet nectar constantly calling your name makes it almost impossible to say no! But it doesn’t have to…just follow these simple steps! Step One: It’s ok to Indulge…Within Reason! Good news my friends, recent diet studies have shown that avoiding what you crave is actually the wrong game plan, and that eating what you yearn for…in reasonable amounts is the way to go. Simply replacing what you crave with something a little healthier can potentially make you consume more calories as you try to satisfy what you lust after! Serving and portion size are the key! Serving size is a standardized acceptable amount of food with nutritional information, usually found on the label. Portion size on the other hand is the amount of food that you choose to eat – it may be more or less than a serving size. You want ice cream, no problem…just eat a small portion size. And if you know you have a hard time enjoying proper portion sizes of your favorite foods, then don’t keep them in the house to limit overindulging! Step Two: Go for a Brisk Walk or Run Exercise releases endorphins, the same “feel good” chemicals that are released in your brain when you eat something you crave. So the next time those sugar cravings hit hard…do yourself a favor and hit the pavement! You’ll thank yourself later! Step Three: Reduce Your Stress Often times we tend comfort ourselves with foods that are high is sugar when we are anxious and stressed out. While they make us feel good while eating them, unfortunately sugary foods can actually worsen our moods by giving us a quick burst of energy followed by a heavy crash. Destroy your sweet tooth cravings by keeping your stress under control. Mediation, yoga, or even some simple deep breaths can help bring your stress level back to normal.
