Depeche Mode. Reimagined. (DM.R.) is a fan project. This is an homage to the artists @depechemode and @U2official 02:24 🫶🌹 This version is a fan remix by @DM-Reimagined based on the original version: U2 - Mysterious Ways (Official Music Video): • U2 - Mysterious Ways (Official Music Video) Martin Gore has spoken about the relationship between Depeche Mode and U2 on several occasions, most notably regarding the "crossover" period in the early 1990s when both bands were working with producer Flood. The most famous quote comes from an interview with Q Magazine (and later reflected in the liner notes for the Achtung Baby 20th Anniversary tribute): "We first heard Achtung Baby working on Songs of Faith and Devotion with Flood. It was the closest our bands ever got: U2 had become more electronic while Depeche Mode were working on a new rock vision. But there was never a rivalry." Key Insights from Martin Gore on U2: The "Flood" Connection: During the early '90s, the two bands practically swapped sonic identities. U2 was experimenting with European industrial and electronic sounds for Achtung Baby, while Depeche Mode was moving toward a grittier, "live band" rock sound with Songs of Faith and Devotion. Covering "So Cruel": In 2011, Depeche Mode covered U2’s "So Cruel" for the tribute album AHK-toong BAY-bi. Gore noted that Bono used "reverse psychology" in an email to convince them to do it, saying he’d understand if they said no. Gore praised the track, saying, "‘So Cruel’ is Bono at his best, words-wise." +1 The Song "One": When choosing a song to cover, Gore admitted they stayed away from U2's biggest hit: "We couldn’t tackle ‘One’—that would be almost sacrilegious." Mutual Respect: Bono later returned the compliment, reportedly telling Gore via email that Depeche Mode "did with the song [So Cruel] what U2 couldn’t."
