Book artist Mary Ann Wight first shows a book she created about her "picture bride" grandmother. She discusses a group book project in the form of cylindrical paper lanterns, The Sunday Before. Each memorializes a WWII Japanese American concentration camp; each illuminates excerpts from The Sunday Before, a book of sermons given by Japanese American ministers the day before the congregations’ 1942 internment. She comments on the evolution in Japanese American communities from assimilation to preserving and celebrating aspects of Japanese culture. She also discusses the internment of the Western Oregon Japanese American farmers, in disregard of their crucial agricultural role. Interview is part of the Berkeley Historical Society and Museum 2024–2025 exhibition "Roots, Removal and Resistance: Japanese Americans in Berkeley." Several lanterns/pages are included in the exhibition.
