Ohio State men's basketball guard Bruce Thornton made history Saturday after breaking the school's all-time scoring record during the Buckeyes' final game of the regular season. Thornton, a senior, took the top spot from previous record-holder, Dennis Hopson, who set the long-standing record at 2,096 points in 1987. Other players at the top of that list include Herb Williams, William Buford and Jerry Lucas. FULL STORY: https://www.10tv.com/article/sports/l... Coming in to Saturday's game, Thornton needed just 12 points to break the record. The game also marked Thornton's final home game as a Buckeye. A 3-pointer with 44 seconds remaining in the first half put Thornton into the Ohio State record book ahead of Hopson, who was on hand to present Thornton with the ball used to break the record. Ohio State is looking to make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2022. The feat would also be Thornton's first time playing in the tournament. They have earned a double-bye in the Big Ten Tournament, and will be either the No. 7 or No. 8 seed. The Buckeyes will open play on Thursday. A 6-foot-2 point guard from Fairburn, Georgia, Thornton arrived in Columbus in 2022 and quickly became the team’s primary playmaker and leader. He came to Ohio State as a four-star recruit in a top-10 signing class for former coach Chris Holtmann in 2022, but Holtmann and the rest of the class are long gone. He has spent his entire collegiate career playing for the Buckeyes, leading the team in scoring for three consecutive seasons and averaging nearly 20 points per game this season. Thornton is the first player in program history to serve as a four-time captain. Entering his senior season, Thornton had already started and played in more than 100 games and accumulated more than 1,400 career points. He was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team in 2025 and Third Team in 2024, as well as being named an Academic All-Big Ten in those years.
