Wide of destruction at the Rafah tunnel area STORYLINE Israel bombarded the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip with more than 180 airstrikes early on Saturday, the military said, widening a blistering assault on militant operations to include the prime minister's headquarters, a police compound and a vast network of smuggling tunnels. At dawn on Saturday, destruction and debris could be seen at the Rafah Gaza border with Egypt, where tents once stood around the tunnel crossings. Israeli aircraft allegedly went after the hundreds of underground tunnels militants used to smuggle in weapons and other contraband from Egypt, residents reported. The tunnels have also been a lifeline for residents of the area during the recent fighting, providing a conduit for food, fuel and other goods after supplies stopped coming in from Israel before the military operation began. Israel's military says it has struck more than 800 targets in the Gaza Strip, as it expands a fierce air assault responding to rocket launches from the Palestinian territory. The Israeli military called up thousands of reservists and massed troops, tanks and armoured vehicles along the border with Hamas-ruled Gaza, signalling a ground invasion could be imminent. Six people, including five militants, were killed and dozens were wounded in the various attacks Saturday, a Gaza health official said. In all, 35 Palestinians, including 13 civilians, and three Israeli civilians have been killed since the Israeli operation began. The campaign began Wednesday with the assassination of the ruling Hamas militant group's military chief Ahmed Jabari.after days of heavy rocket fire from Gaza.
