Why Can't We? (No It Couldn't...) 03:15 XIII. Pizza Restaurant at the End of the Universe Letters Never Sent is my first full album. It is a programmatic collection of pieces written for solo piano. All pieces were written and notated over the span of more than one year, starting in January 2024 and ending in October 2025. Full album in 24-bit/88.2kHz available for purchase at Bandcamp: https://matteosohn.bandcamp.com/album... Originally, when I wrote the first piece of the album, I planned to have a simple and short collection of unrelated piano pieces. However, the album shifted in direction as I composed more and reflected on my life outside of music. The album tells an overarching story of a failed romance. The tone of the first few pieces are lively, innocent, and simple, but the remaining pieces quickly shift toward more dramatic and dark themes. It illustrates a descent into madness and depression, with bits of melancholy and nostalgia along the way. These two movements showcase the peak of insanity that is expressed toward the end of the album. In the original album, movements XII. and XIII. transition seamlessly; movement XII. ends with a loud piano slam, and then movement XIII. starts with a reversed version of the previous movement, and then proceeds to a glitchy horror-esque soundscape, inspired by The Mind Electric by Miracle Musical. During the time of this performance, I was a freshman undergraduate composition student studying with Erik Santos at the University of Michigan. My first project for my compositions studies was notating movement XIII. after producing it on a DAW for the album. After notating it, I decided to perform these two movements together live at one of our Student Composer Concerts to showcase my versatility of compositions styles, ranging from romanticism to electronics to avant-garde. This album is deeply personal to me, as it was a huge part of my high school life. It also showcases my evolution as a young composer. It is one of my most honest works of music. Please enjoy. © 2025 Matteo Sohn
