United States civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson has died aged 84. Al Jazeera, quoting a family statement, says Jackson “died peacefully” on Tuesday morning. The statement added: “His steadfast dedication to justice, equality, and human rights played a pivotal role in shaping a global movement for freedom and dignity." “Our father was a servant leader, not only to our family but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world," the Jackson family said. “We shared him with the world, and in return, the world became part of our extended family.” A close associate of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr (MLK), the Baptist minister twice ran for the Democratic presidential nomination. He spent decades advocating for the rights of Black Americans and other minorities, dating back to the tumultuous 1960s civil rights movement. Raised in the segregated US South, Jackson first entered the public eye as MLK’s mentee. He was with MLK when he was assassinated at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis in 1968. In a 2008 interview with Al Jazeera, Jackson stated that MLK’s assassination had "traumatised" him and accused the US government of spreading unfounded fears about his mentor among the public. On the 27th of October, 1988, the civil rights leader addressed the United Nations Council on Namibia, condemning South Africa's stance in tripartite negotiations between Angola and Cuba.
