Stu Barton’s wife noticed a lump on his neck. After seeing a specialist and getting a biopsy, he received the chilling diagnosis. “Hearing that it was cancer, it changes your life,” he said. Someone close to him also had neck cancer a few years ago and he was treated with chemo and radiation. “To know what he went through, it was a goal to not have to do that if I didn't have to. So, robotic surgery was very intriguing to me,” said Barton. Independent surgeon Dr. Scott Larson performed a highly specialized robotic procedure called TORS. “With surgery, we will remove the cancer from the mouth and then do surgery on the neck to remove lymph nodes from the neck,” said Dr. Larson. “The camera on the robot is magnified and it’s enhanced and it’s a 3-D view. You’re getting a better view then you were just looking through the patient’s mouth with your own eye.” “I was able to have the surgery and then not have to have chemotherapy and radiation to which was the goal. I mean, you can't ask for a better outcome,” said Barton. After a short hospital stay, Barton was back to his normal self in no time. “Every week I just noticed the improvement. Every week was just, it's like, wow, you look back and you go, this week is so much better than last week,” said Barton. “We live close to the beach, and we walk our dogs every day.” You can learn more by searching for robotic surgery on leehealth.org.
