#pectusexcavatum #modifiedravitchprocedure #deformedchestsurgery #concavesternum #sternum #medical #myocardialbridge #new #podcast This post is my personal journey after undergoing surgery to treat Pectus Excavatum (PE), a congenital chest deformity. I share my experience and provide insights into the bar removal and recovery. While a bit more unique, my PE was discovered while addressing a heart condition, and the mandatory surgery was done alongside heart surgery with a thoracic surgeon completing the Modified Ravitch procedure. I share the possibility of the surgical bar or pin shifting within the chest and how this can be managed as it actually did happen to me. (Only 1-2% of the surgeries have a situation where the bar "shifts" but in the event it does, you'll understand it a little better. It's not as bad as it sounds.) I also want to emphasize that while his surgery wasn't primarily for cosmetic reasons, it did slightly improve my chest's appearance, but most importantly it relieved the heart-related issues the PE was causing. And while the PE was not the culprit of the congenital heart condition I have (it's known as a Myocardial Bridge but that's another whole story) it was necessary for a successful recovery. If you need the surgery, cosmetically or otherwise, I hope this sheds a little more light on the potential challenges and the actual bar removal. If nothing else, stay positive, be aware, and good luck with the healing process. It does get better.
