Some private equity firms in emerging Asian markets still shirk at being labeled specialist, arguing that a narrow focus risks missing out on a wealth of growth opportunities. The US, several decades down the line in terms of the private equity development process, is understandably different. "As the years have gone by, it has become more and more essential to specialize and understand your industry sectors very well," says Eric Becker, co-founder and senior managing director of US-based mid-market GP Sterling Partners. "We find that by having deep, long-term relationships in an industry we are able to both source new opportunities as well as identify the talent needed to lead those companies and to build great teams." Sterling's areas of focus are education, healthcare and niches in the business services sector. According to Becker, the firm has been researching these areas for most of the 29 years it has been in existence and continues to find opportunities. "We continue to see growth in terms of greater private interest in the education and healthcare sectors, and a tremendous need for productivity improvement in industries that have not traditionally been especially efficient," he says. "There is an opportunity for what I would call must-have solutions instead of nice-to-have solutions."
