Why is the plural of goose geese, but the plural of moose isn’t meese? This English quirk always annoyed me (like from a very young age). And when I finally set out to find the answer, I sort of... fell down a rabbit hole. What I found was way more interesting (and far less settled) than I'd expected. In this video, I break down: Why some English plurals change vowels instead of adding “-s” When English actually stopped experimenting with plural forms Two competing theories for why moose never became mooses And what zero plurals like deer, sheep, and fish have to do with it. Fair warning: this is one of those language questions that doesn’t have a single, neat answer.... If you’ve encountered a better explanation, or know something I don’t, I’d love to hear it in the comments. #wordhistory #englishlanguage #grammar #etymology #wordnerd
