The upper Limb is divided into regions, we have a division of the forearm and arm. The topic of discussion in this anatomy lecture is the region of the arm. It extends from the shoulder joint to the elbow joint. When we talk about the bone of the arm only the humerus is the sole bone of the arm. ▬ 📃 Muscles of the Arm Just like any anatomical region also has its own musculature. The muscles of the arm are divided into two compartments by intermuscular septa. These compartments are known as the anterior and posterior compartments of the arm. The arterial supply of the region of the arm comes from an artery called the brachial artery. In this video, we will discuss the following points in detail 🟠 Anterior Compartment of the Arm 🟠 Posterior Compartment of the Arm 🟠 Brachial Artery ▬ 📜 Upper Limb: Arm The region of the arm extends from the shoulder joint to the elbow joint. The upper arm is divided into an anterior and a posterior osseofascial compartment, each having a set of muscles, nerves, and arteries. ▬ 📃 Anterior Compartment of Upper Limb The Anterior compartment of the arm comprises three muscles, the brachial artery, vena comitantes, and nerves. The three muscles of the anterior compartment of the arm are 👉 Biceps Brachii It is a large muscle that has two heads that originate from the scapula and insert into the humerus. It is innervated by a branch of the brachial plexus known as the musculocutaneous nerve. The biceps brachii is the primary flexor muscle of the arm. It also assists in the abduction and supination of the arm. 👉 Coracobrachialis This muscle originates from the scapula and inserts into the humerus. This muscle assists in flexion and adduction of the arm at the shoulder joint. It is also innervated by the musculocutaneous nerve. 👉 Brachialis The brachialis muscle is a deep muscle of the upper arm. It has a large belly. It makes the biceps brachii look much bigger and larger on the surface than it is. 👉 Nerves that are part of the Upper Arm Anatomy Several nerves pass through the anterior compartment of the arm. One is the musculocutaneous nerve which gives motor innervation to the muscles of the anterior compartment of the upper arm. Other nerves that pass through this compartment are the median nerve, ulnar nerve, and radial nerve. You can learn about the course of these nerves by watching the full video. ▬ 📜 Posterior Compartment of the Upper Limb The posterior compartment of the arm comprises two muscles 👉 Triceps Brachii The triceps brachii has three heads – the long head seen here originates from the scapula. Whereas the medial head which is the smallest of the three arises from the humerus and the lateral head also originates from the humerus. The three heads of the triceps brachii fuse into a common tendon and insert into the olecranon of the ulna. The muscle is innervated by the radial nerve. A branch of the posterior cord of the brachial Plexus. Triceps Brachii has an extensor function. It causes upper arm extension, which is the opposite action of what muscles in the anterior compartment of the arm. 👉 Anconeus It is a small muscle that is often overlooked and not considered to be truly a part of the posterior compartment. It assists the action of the triceps brachii, meaning it acts as an extensor muscle and assists the upper arm extension. 👉 Profunda Brachii Artery It is a branch of the brachial artery that supplies the posterior compartment of the arm. The Profunda brachii artery is a large branch, arising just below the teres major.
