Is it just me, or is it weirdly unsatisfying to play through a software amp? Even one that sounds technically brilliant? This, combined with the hit-and-miss complexity (and noise) of recording real amps, has led me to the world of guitar preamp pedals. I've actually been using the Walrus Audio ACS1 on most of my recent demos, as its clean black-panel Fender tones are pure, open and balanced - more so than those of the Strymon Iridium - and it gets on really with other pedals. The big question is, has the 2023 firmware update really fixed its two biggest flaws - namely a gain boost that's stifled by lack of headroom, and British crunch sounds that don't quite convince? Watch this video to find out. And stay tuned in the coming weeks for matching demos of the ACS1's two biggest rivals: the aforementioned Iridium and the vaaaaaastly improved DSM & Humboldt Simplifier MkII. (Guitar is a Telecaster.) * Welcome to Dickie's 90-Second Pedal Demos! No waffling, no widdling, no blues-rock grimacing. No edits, no backing tracks, no uncritical gushing. And absolutely no paid/promoted/sponsored content. Just quick, simple, irreverent but high-quality introductions to great pedals – both acclaimed classics and underrated gems – and how to get the best out of them. #walrusaudio #acs1 #preamp #dickiesound
