In this presentation, Fako Berkers (TU Delft) shows how large language models can be used to grade open-ended exam questions using a carefully crafted and detailed rubric. The model matches student answers to predefined performance levels within the rubric and can provide targeted comments. If the LLM is uncertain, the teacher can step in to grade. Crucially, Berkers emphasises that the “intelligence” is not in the AI itself, but in the careful construction of the rubric. The language model simply applies this rubric - consistently and at scale. This video was recorded during the event Grading exams with generative AI (VU CTL, 2025).
