This procedure shows the removal of an implantable loop recorder. A loop recorder is a small device that is inserted under the skin overlaying the left chest. Loop recorders can sense the electrical activity of the heart, and provide continuous heart rhythm monitoring. Loop recorders were first used to assess for abnormally fast or slow heart rhythms, or to determine the cause of fainting episodes (syncope). Loop recorders are now able to detect atrial fibrillation, even when overall heart rates are normal range. This is useful for monitoring therapies for atrial fibrillation and diagnosing atrial fibrillation as a cause of stroke. Loop recorders are powered by an internal battery, which lasts for 3-4 years. Loop recorders are typically removed when the battery expires, or need for monitoring is satisfied.
