Modern Charkhas introduced to empower Kashmiri women artisans and boost production

The government has introduced modern charkhas (spinning machines) to support artisans, especially women, in the valley. Aiming to uplift various sectors through technology, the Department of Handicrafts and Handlooms has brought in table-top, foot-operated spinning wheels to enhance the production of pashmina and silk threads. These upgraded charkhas are designed to be more efficient and ergonomic, addressing long-standing issues like back, knee, and shoulder pain caused by traditional models. By improving comfort and output, the initiative is expected to attract more women to the craft, ensuring better livelihood opportunities. The modern design allows artisans to spin while sitting on chairs, unlike the floor-seated traditional method. This development not only increases productivity but also revives and preserves the rich Kashmiri spinning tradition known as "yender."
