Heart-Brain Coherence This roundtable session with Dr. Rollin McCraty focused on how the heart and brain interact in a dynamic relationship that affects many aspects of cognition and significantly influences emotional experience. It has been demonstrated that sustained positive emotions facilitate an emergent shift in psychophysiological functioning. This state called psychophysiological coherence is casually associated with optimal functioning. It reflects increased order in higher-level brain systems, increased synchronization in the autonomic nervous system, and a general shift in autonomic balance towards increased parasympathetic activity. Rollin McCraty, Ph.D., Director of Research at the HeartMath Institute provided an overview of innovative research on optimal functioning. This presentation provided new scientific research on a specific measurable state called “physiological coherence” and how this optimal state increases cognitive performance and health outcomes. Coherence levels can be measured by analysis of heart rate variability and smartphone based instrumentation is used to facilitate learning how to shift into a more coherent state anytime and anywhere. He also presented data showing how the heart radiates a measurable magnetic field which carries information which can affect other people around us. Rollin McCraty, Ph.D. is Director of Research of the HeartMath Research Center at the HeartMath Institute. He is also a visiting Professor at Florida Atlantic University. As a psychophysiologist, Dr. McCraty’s research interests include the physiology of emotion, with a focus on the mechanisms by which emotions influence cognitive processes, behavior, and health as well as the global interconnectivity between people and the earth’s energetic systems. Findings from this research have been applied to the development of tools and technology to optimize individual and organizational health, performance, and quality of life. He has been featured in a number of documentary films such as I am, The Truth, The Joy of Sox move, The Power of the Heart, Solar Revolution, and The Living Matrix among many others.
