Consultative selling isn’t about pushing products. It’s about building trust, understanding your customer and offering the right solution. In my experience, salespeople who master this approach deliver more value, win more business and keep customers coming back. In this video we share a simple sales model — PULSE — to guide your consultative sales conversations. Each step helps you focus on the customer’s needs, ask the right questions and demonstrate your expertise. P = Position Set the scene. At the start of your meeting, clarify the objective and show the customer why it’s worth their time. Take charge of the interaction and build credibility. U = Understand Use questions to learn about the customer’s business, challenges and goals. This isn’t an interrogation — it’s a conversation. Listen actively and mutually define their needs. L = Leverage Create urgency by exploring the impact of the problems and the cost of doing nothing. Help the customer see the full picture, then guide them towards action. S = Solution Present your solution. Focus on benefits over features and link everything back to the customer’s needs. Handle common objections up front (e.g. price) and involve the customer in deciding on the best option. E = Evolve Move the sale forward. Agree next steps — whether it’s an order, a follow‑up meeting or another action. Both parties should leave knowing exactly what’s happened and what needs to happen next. Consultative selling places the customer at the centre. It’s about asking, advising and solving — not pitching.
