At one time, there were more than 600 fire lookout sites in California. Today, less than 200 of those remain, including the site on Alder Ridge in the El Dorado National Forest. Getting to the site is easier said than done. "It wouldn't be special if it wasn't as hard to get to," HistoriCorps’ Aaron Smith said. The cabin sits 6,000 feet up and has been weathered by time. "Surprisingly, it's still standing," Chuck Hutcheson, Heritage Program Manager for the U.S. Forest Service, said. The Alder Ridge lookout was built in 1937 and provided a bird's eye view in hopes of spotting fires.
