Sculptor AC Button of http://www.carolinasculpturestudio.com continues the process of direct carving life-sized Tulips in high relief in Georgia Blue Granite. This video is the third of five videos, two of initial carving and three of finish carving, of this specific project. The goal of the Traditional Stone Carving and Traditional Stone Finishing videos is to preserve this heritage craft by preparing individuals for further in-studio training and apprenticeship. After initial carving has removed bulk material, the process of more accurate material removal can proceed. It is always tempting to move quickly to producing more exciting and intrinsic detail. Through experience, professionals learn to produce work in stages and in conjunction with the production of neighboring and partnering elements. Carving is a reductive method, which means that individual details are more likely to shrink as they are carved than they are to grow. When separated neighboring details shrink, they generally migrate away from each other. This can be detrimental to both detail agreement and to the overall composition. It is a common pitfall when direct carving complicated or compound multiple-element compositions. Button emphasizes carving as a global process. A preferred strategy is carving tangent elements from their exterior as a single component versus separating them early and carving them as two separate elements. Once properly developed as a single component, the individual elements are carved to the point of tangent or desired separation for final definition. This global carving approach is all-inclusive. It produces more precise placement & agreement of ornate elements just as readily as it produces more precise placement & agreement of carved elements upon the ground or face of the supporting surface. This is why the intersection of each Tulip Spray with the ground is not carved to completion until later in the project. By leaving a slight crown or amount of raised material on the ground where it meets the raised carvings until after the floral elements are completed, a very accurate intersection without skew or imperfection can be produced.
