Superficial peroneal nerve (AKA Superficial Fibular Nerve) arises from the common peroneal nerve. Just inferior and lateral to the fibular head, at the fibular neck, the common peroneal nerve bifurcates into the superficial peroneal nerve (AKA Superficial fibular nerve) and deep peroneal nerve (AKA deep fibular nerve). Superficial fibular nerve innervates the muscles in the lateral compartment (Extrinsic muscles - peroneus longus and peroneus brevis muscles), which are mainly responsible for ankle eversion. As it arises in the foot and travels more inferiorly, the superficial peroneal nerve further divides into two branches: medial and intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerves. The remaining portion of the superficial peroneal nerve in the foot is purely sensory as it supplies sensory information to the dorsal aspect of the foot, except for the first dorsal web space. Common Peroneal Nerve AKA Common Fibular Nerve receives fibers from the posterior divisions of L4 through S2. The common peroneal nerve is one of the main branches of the sciatic nerve. A few centimeters superior to the popliteal fossa the sciatic nerve bifurcates into the common peroneal nerve and the tibial nerve. The common peroneal nerve continues distally into the anterior and lateral compartments of the lower leg and foot while the tibial nerve descends towards the posterior compartment. Just inferior and lateral to the fibular head, at the fibular neck, the common peroneal nerve bifurcates into the superficial peroneal nerve (AKA Superficial fibular nerve) and deep peroneal nerve (AKA deep fibular nerve). The superficial peroneal nerve supplies the motor innervation to the lateral compartment of the leg, which is responsible for foot eversion, while the deep peroneal nerve supplies the motor innervation to the anterior compartment, responsible for ankle dorsiflexion, toe extension, and foot inversion. Deep Peroneal Nerve AKA Deep Fibular Nerve (arises from the common peroneal nerve). Just inferior and lateral to the fibular head, at the fibular neck, the common peroneal nerve bifurcates into the superficial peroneal nerve (AKA Superficial fibular nerve) and deep peroneal nerve (AKA deep fibular nerve). Deep peroneal nerve supplies motor innervation to the muscles in the anterior compartment of the leg (Extrinsic muscles (tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus and extensor digitorum longus). It also innervated the peroneus tertius. Intrinsic foot muscles - On the dorsal aspect of the foot, the deep peroneal nerve innervates the extensor digitorum brevis and the extensor hallucis brevis. The first two dorsal interossei muscles may also receive innervation from the deep peroneal nerve. Deep peroneal nerve descends lateral to the anterior tibial artery and is located just anterior to the interosseous membrane within the anterior compartment of the leg. Just superior to the ankle joint, the deep peroneal nerve divides into a lateral branch and a medial branch. The lateral branch courses deep to the extensor digitorum brevis and extensor digitorum hallucis muscles and provides their motor innervations and some sensory innervation to the ankle. The medial branch courses medially as it moves towards the first dorsal web space to supply its sensory innervation.
