Raj Narain

31st December is also the death anniversary of freedom fighter and social activist Raj Narain. He was born on 23rd November 1917 in Varanasi. Raj Narain took active part in social activities during student life. In 1934 Raj Narain became a member of the Congress Socialist Party and helped organise a school and a labour organisation. He also served as a member of the National Committee of Students Federation from 1939 to 1944. During the Quit India movement, Raj Narain was the president of Student Congress and led protests in and around Varanasi. He was arrested on 28 September 1942, during the Quit India Movement and was imprisoned till 1945. When India became independent, Raj Narain joined SocialistParty. He was close to AcharyaNarendra Deva and Dr. Rammanohar Lohia. Dr. Lohia described him as "a person who has the heart of a Lion and practices Gandhi. He became a member of Rajya Sabha in 1966 from Socialist Party.Raj Narain also served as the health minister during the Janta party government. He breathed his last on 31 December 1986 at the age of 69.
