Learn how to adjust photographs with a limited color range and challenging tonal areas for laser engraving. In this video, we demonstrate how to enhance clarity, increase contrast, and fine-tune shadows and highlights in Photoshop to make subtle images laser-friendly. Avoid common issues like blown-out highlights or lost shadow details, and achieve crisp, detailed engravings. Using a photograph of mushrooms, we cover techniques including smart object adjustments, Camera Raw editing, black & white adjustment layers, unsharp mask sharpening, and cropping for composition. By the end, you’ll know how to work with challenging photos to optimize them for engraving. In this video, you will learn how to: • Use high-resolution images effectively, even with a limited color range. • Apply non-destructive adjustments using smart objects in Photoshop. • Enhance clarity and adjust highlights, shadows, and whites for better detail. • Use black & white adjustment layers to create contrast between similar values. • Sharpen images with the unsharp mask and crop for optimal engraving composition. Note on image inversion: Inverting the image is only necessary for certain engraving processes, such as photo woodblocks or engraving on darker materials (like fabric or bookcloth) that turn lighter when engraved. If you’re engraving a positive image on materials like wood or leather, you can skip the inversion step. 👉 Like the video and subscribe for upcoming lessons.
