King Salmon Offshore Topwater Action - Techniques and Gear

Highlights and lessons learned from testing the boundaries of offshore salmon fishing by kayak in Washington state. I paddled long distances to reach King salmon miles offshore while working on gear modifications to get these fish to strike my presentation near the surface. The typical inshore techniques of diver/flasher/lure did not make sense for trolling for hours during a 35 miles day. A 5 to 6 ounce flutter jig rigged with a large bearing swivel provided the weight and the attraction device, with the lure trailing about 40 inches behind. This rig didn't sink deeper than about 10 feet at speeds of 3 to 4 mph however king salmon would come up from depths of 60 to 70 feet to hit it in the clear offshore water.
