The 1956 short Chevrolet film, “Chevrolet Action Release No. 3: The Big Winner,” produced by Jam Handy, takes a look at Chevrolets and their performance in stock car racing. The film begins with highlights from a few of the stock car events in 1955 and 1956: Daytona Beach, 1955 (00:22); Darlington, SC, 1955 (00:32); Daytona Beach, 1956 (00:48); Sebring, Florida, 1956 (01:08); and Gardena, California, 1956 (01:30), and features a variety of cars including several 1955 Chevrolet sedans and what appears to be a 1956 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster (00:58; 01:10). The film highlights Chevrolet’s point standing (02:56) in the NASCAR Short Track circuit, then cuts to a demonstration race/work session at Gardena Stadium with Chevrolet production models (03:40), featuring a 1956 Chevrolet 210, a 1956 Chevrolet 150, and a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe driven by Jim Reed. The Chevrolets race around the track, demonstrating their handling and durability. The film then moves to Darlington, South Carolina. The date is 26 April 1956 and a 1956 Chevrolet 210 breaks NASCAR’s 24-hour record for a closed-course endurance run (08:35).
