Randall Thompson (1899-1984) composed two string quartets, the first one in D minor, the second in a brighter G Major. This inclusion of key signature in the titles gives us a clue as to the conservative nature of Thompson's output. Though quite out of place, the composer won the admiration of the art music community primarily with his large choral output, but also with a handful of appealing orchestral and chamber works. His teachers included Edward Burlingame Hill, Ernest Bloch, and (oddly enough) Roger Sessions. Thompson's second string quartet received its first performance in in 1967 to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the Harvard Musical Association. The movements are as follows: 1. Preludio: Allegro vivace 2. Air and Variations (3:08) 3. Adagio (7:32) 4. Allegro con brio (15:11) Performed by New Jefferson Chamber Players The recording, which also includes Thompson's first quartet and Howard Hanson's one-movement quartet, is available through the Citadel label: http://www.foothillrecords.com/detail...
