If you do that, it’s easy to write an off-topic essay that doesn’t even address the prompt. Instead, begin by brainstorming or using a mind map to plan your essay. Let’s take a look at an example to see how you’d go about doing that. Imagine the prompt was to explain why pizza is such a popular food. You’d begin with your thesis, or your response to the prompt. In this cas e I’m going to keep it broad and say pizza is popular for three reasons. This is my thesis. I need to support this thesis with some reasons. Now, since I’ve said I’m going to give three reasons, I should give three reasons, and here they are: pizza is delicious, pizza is convenient, and pizza is cheap. I now know what the focus of each of my body paragraphs is going to be, but I shouldn’t start writing yet. We need to further explain each of these topic sentences. In this case, I’ve included two supporting details for each topic sentence. With this mind map I now have the structure of my essay in place, but before I go on to outline my essay I want to make sure that all my details are relevant and supporting my topic sentences. Let’s take a look first at “Pizza is delicious.” I’m supporting Pizza is delicious by saying it combines different ingredients and also that it’s cooked in different ways. These are the two reasons I’m giving to explain why pizza is so delicious. Pizza has pepperoni and tomatoes and lots of other delicious things. Pizza can be cooked New York-style or Chicago deep dish style. I have evidence to show why pizza is convenient. I’ve described how pizzerias are in every suburb and how pizza can be eaten without utensils. Finally, I support that pizza is cheap by explaining that pizza has inexpensive ingredients and that it has a simple preparation process which also helps to lower the cost. Let’s go ahead and convert this mind map into an outline. I begin with my thesis statement that pizza is popular for three reasons. I have my three topic sentences that support my thesis. Here are my three reasons why pizza is so popular. Then, I support each of my topic sentences with some supporting details that explain the why and how. With this plan in place, I can now go ahead and write a clear essay that will be logical and organized.
