Instituto de Física, UNAM Title: Top Quarks -The heavyweights in the particles world Speaker: Manfred Kraus, Instituto de Física, UNAM Summary: The top-quark, the heaviest elementary particle in the Standard Model, holds a unique position in particle physics. Its large mass places it at the heart of improving our understanding of the electroweak symmetry breaking and provides an excellent probe for Physics beyond the Standard Model. I will discuss the top-quark mass extraction using events with a top-quark pair and an additional jet. Here, we emphasize the need of an accurate theoretical modelling of the process to obtain reliable uncertainty estimates. I will also discuss the recent ATLAS top-quark mass measurement that utilizes our improved theoretical predictions.
