The Standard Format is the main competitive format of the Pokemon TCG, allowing players to use cards printed from the last 2 years in their decks. Once a card leaves Standard, it’s still usable in the Expanded format. Expanded allows players to use all cards released since the first Black and White expansion from 2011. Notably, this means there’s no official format to use cards from before 2011, leaving over a decade of cards nowhere to be played. Players who prefer playing cards from before the Black & White era, or who may just want a change of pace from the high power Standard and Expanded formats, can enjoy playing retro formats for their unique gameplay and card pools. Today, we’re taking a look at some of the most popular retro formats, their best strategies, and what makes them stand out within the Pokemon TCG’s 25-year history.
