I today's wine tasting Wine Searcher's master of Wine, David Allen, tastes a bottle of one of Portugal's historic, Sweet, fortified wines - Bacalhoa's Moscatel de Setubal 2009. Bacalhôa was founded in 1922 under the name Joao Pires & filhos, initially as a bulk wine producer. The Quinta da Bacalhoa estate itself is a 14th-century palace of enormous historical significance. The property was owned by the American Scoville family, who began planting vineyards there in the 1930s. In the 80s significant innovative winemaking steps occurred here, such as the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon or the development of a range of barrel-fermented white wines, including Chardonnay. In 1998 José Berardo became the primary shareholder in Joao Pires, making significant investments and continuing the company’s innovative approach. In 2000 this saw them enter into a joint venture at Quinta do Carmo with the Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of Chateau Lafitte. In 2005 the company changed its name to Bacalhôa, then in 2007 they acquired the majority share capital of Caves Alianica – a well-known producer of sparkling wines and spirits whose heritage dated back to 1927 when it had been founded as a co-operative in Sangalhos (Anadia). The acquisition of Caves Alianica meant Bacalhôa had wineries in the following significant Portuguese wine regions: Alentejo, Península de Setúbal, Bairrada, Beiras, Dão and Douro. The company owns a total of 1200 hectares of vineyards, planted with 40 different varieties and 4 wine producing cellars. The company is impressive for one of its size in in producing 70% of the fruit needed to produce its own wine. They have a production capacity exceeding 20 million litres a year.
