Well folks, after spending some time transitioning back to the SoCal life, I was finally able to head back out trackside for another railfanning trip and continue my video series along Metrolink’s Ventura and Antelope Valley Lines. This trip was primarily focused on railfanning at the Northridge and both Burbank Airport (North and South) stations, with Northridge and Burbank Airport - North on Thursday and wrapping up with Burbank Airport - South on Friday in that particular order. With that in mind, after heading into town the night before and staying overnight in North Hollywood, I made my way out to Northridge for the Thursday morning commuter rush. The Northridge Metrolink Station features some modest amenities for passengers as well as an interesting station design where the paved platform area is relatively large and the station structures themselves are set back a fair distance from the tracks; providing for some unique angles not otherwise too common at other stations. Interestingly, the station also still retains the original asphalt platform built immediately after the infamous 1994 Northridge earthquake. The Northridge Metrolink Station is the only station that does not receive joint service with Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner after diverging and heading west from Burbank Junction (just north of the Burbank - Downtown Metrolink Station); where most Amtrak trains are typically seen flying by this station. The only exceptions to this are with Amtrak 759 and 768 as part of a Shared Service operating within a Metrolink time slot during typical weekday operations. This shared train service is known as the ‘Rail 2 Rail’ program, though this station is not mentioned in any Amtrak timetable and is only mentioned within the Metrolink timetable. Overall, whether it is the Metrolink only service, the friendly onsite security, the few Amtrak trains stopping, or the majority of Amtrak trains flying by, the Northridge Metrolink Station makes for an interesting spot to railfan the Coast Line action ! Note : Metrolink #108 was cancelled on this day due to Metrolink #101 being cancelled at Van Nuys due to mechanical issues. The trainset from #101 typically terminates at Moorpark and resumes as #110 back to Los Angeles Union Station. Metrolink passengers were accommodated on Metrolink #103 heading west with stops extending to Moorpark (serving as a substitute for #101); and Amtrak 768 and Metrolink #110 (serving as substitutes for #108) for those heading east on this day. Train 1 : Metrolink #103 with MP36PH-3C #900 & CabCar #655. Not long after getting to the station, Metrolink #103 pulls into the station with just enough time to catch it ! Train 2 : Amtrak 768 with CabCar #6907 & SC-44 #2110. In conjunction with Metrolink, Amtrak 768 and 759 are the only Amtrak trains that do stop at Northridge as part of a Shared Service with Metrolink; operating within a Metrolink time slot during typical weekday operations. This shared train service is known as the ‘Rail 2 Rail’ program. Train 3 : Metrolink #110 with CabCar #655 & MP36PH-3C #900. This trainset is the turn from Metrolink #103 previously; substituting for Metrolink #108 on this day due to the mechanical issues and cancellation of Metrolink #101 and #108. Nice crew. Train 4 : Amtrak 763 with SC-44 #2111 & CabCar #6903. This train was definitely hauling ! Friendly engineer with some extra blasts of the horn as well ! Train 5 : Union Pacific LOF41-30 (Day Bud Switcher) with GP60 #1150 & GP38-2 #654. Not long after Amtrak 763 passed through, this local appears in the distance following right behind, coming from Gemco Yard. This train will continue to Simi Valley where it typically services the BMC lumber yard before returning back to Gemco Yard. Friendly crew and waves ! Train 6 : Metrolink #107 with F59PHI #887 & CabCar #650. Another friendly crew on this train with some extra horn action from the engineer upon departure as well ! Train 7 : Amtrak 14 (Coast Starlight) with P42DC #171 & B32-8WH #506. Friendly engineer on #171 ! Train 8 : Metrolink #112 with CabCar #650 & F59PHI #887. After terminating at Chatsworth earlier as Metrolink #107, the same trainset returns towards Los Angeles Union Station as #112. Same friendly crew from #107 ! Train 9 : Amtrak 774 with CabCar #6901 & SC-44 #2112. Great crew on this train ! Thanks for Watching !
