Fort 13 Jilava was set up in 1907 as a military prison, the destination of which was kept until April 1, 1948. Hundreds of peasants from Ilfov county, arrested for participating in the peasant uprising in 1907, were placed in this military prison. During the First World War, it was populated with detainees from the ranks of the military who refused to join or for other military offenses. After the occupation of Bucharest by German troops, prisoners of war were brought here. On the night of November 26/27, 1940, the Legionary Police killed, in the cells of the Jilava military prison, a number of 64 political prisoners (see the Jilava massacre). Many of the historical, political, cultural inter-war personalities (Marshal Antonescu, Corneliu Coposu, Mihai Antonescu, Monsignor Vladimir Ghika or Radu Lecca) passed here and some even found their end on the execution field Valea Piersicilor (Valea Plângerii), near the fort. The last prisoners who were imprisoned here were those from the 1989 Revolution. Currently, some of the former cells are already being set up for the purpose of the commemorative museum.
