May 27 2022 is a special day because Albert Heijn is celebrating its 135th anniversary! To commemorate this, we would like to take you on a 135-second journey through our history with numerous special highlights. A lot has happened since 21-year-old Albert Heijn took over his father's small grocery shop in 1887. For example, in 1955 we started with our first loyalty program, which later became the Premium of the Month Club. This successful savings campaign allowed you to save for non-food items if you handed in a full stamp book. This is how the Netherlands was introduced to the fridge. Did you know that Albert Heijn also introduced the barcode in Europe? And in the 60s and 70s, we introduced our customers to several new fruits and vegetables, such as kiwi and mango.
