In Fall 2024, the Donkey Mill Art Center welcomed young artists for the in-person week of the Young Artist Residency Program, Pass It On: Intergenerational Learning and Legacy Building Through Art, fostering creativity and cultural exchange throughout the experience. Nine emerging artists embarked on an unforgettable journey alongside acclaimed Seattle-based artist Michelle Kumata. Over the course of the six-month residency, these talented youth from Kona delved deep into personal identity, ancestral heritage, and family lore—using oral history interview techniques to uncover meaningful stories from their elders. Under Michelle Kumata’s inspiring mentorship, the young artists transformed these stories into striking visual works, each piece a heartfelt tribute to their roots and a bold step forward in their artistic paths. The residency culminated in a special exhibition and gathering titled Memories Into Light, where the young artists shared their work through personal presentations. Families, friends, and community partners gathered at the Donkey Mill to celebrate their creative journeys and achievements. More than a residency, it was a transformative celebration of storytelling, art, and intergenerational connection. This program, Pass It On: Intergenerational Learning and Legacy Building Through Art and the exhibition, Hānau Ka Moʻolelo, were made possible by support from the Laila Twigg-Smith Art Fund of Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, the Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities through support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Hiroaki Elaine & Lawrence Kono Foundation, Hōlualoa Inn, the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival and our community of individual donors. This film was created by Austin Chu in collaboration with Mina Elison and Ashley Raymond. Featured in the film are the nine Kona-based Young Artist Residents, 2024 Donkey Mill Artist-in-Residence Michelle Kumata, and artist and Donkey Mill co-founder, Hiroki Morinoue.
