Chinese brands are entering the Australian market en masse, with MG, GWM (Great Wall Haval) and BYD all relative newcomers. But in the case of Chery, it's actually relaunching Down Under after an unsuccessful stint in certain states last decade. Needless to say, there's a lot riding on its first model, the Omoda 5. The 2023 Chery Omoda 5 is a small SUV, so it competes with the MG ZS and Haval Jolion at the more affordable end of the segment. Speaking of which, the Omoda 5 hangs its hat on value, offering competitive pricing alongside a long list of standard equipment. However, as CarsGuide Senior Journalist Laura Berry finds out in this expert review, Chery's latest model also offers a challenging driving experience, which could be a dealbreaker for discerning buyers. But the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine tested here will be joined by a sportier 1.6-litre unit later in 2023, while an EV version will join the line-up in 2024.
