The two types of major abdominal wall defects include omphalocele and gastroschisis. Learn more at http://fetalsurgery.chop.edu. Abdominal wall defects occur very early in gestation. The abdominal wall doesn’t form exactly as it should, and abdominal contents are left protruding out of a hole in the abdomen. The causes of these two major abdominal wall defects are unknown. In this video, experts from the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia talk about the differences between omphalocele and gastroschisis. Omphalocele is usually in the middle of the abdomen, covered with a membrane, and may or may not contain the liver. Babies with omphaloceles fall into a wide spectrum of severity. The condition is classified based on which organs are involved, and divided up by small (bowel only), large (some liver) and giant omphalocele (majority of liver is outside the abdomen). Most cases of gastroschisis involve the intestine and other abdominal organs protruding through a hole in the abdominal wall to the side of the belly button or umbilical cord. It is not covered by a membrane.
