This lecture was recorded on February 20th and was the first in our series of virtual lectures. Zacharie Kinslow’s research focuses on the life and career of Elias Polk. Once enslaved by President James K. Polk, Elias rose from the confines of bondage to become a leading black conservative in the American southeast. Supporting southern Democrats, who had earlier enslaved him and his people, Elias Polk’s story reveals a complex and pragmatic figure who did what he could to survive in post-Civil War America, while also actively working to secure and perpetuate African-American economic independence. Bio: A native of Maury County, Tennessee, Zacharie Kinslow received a Masters Degree in US History from Austin Peay State University 2019. Through his work in history, Zacharie has been published twice online by the White House Historical Association, employed as a docent/museum educator at the President James K. Polk Home & Museum in Columbia, Tennessee from 2015-2019, worked as an intern on the Papers of President Martin Van Buren, as well as preparing forthcoming works through the Tennessee Historical Quarterly and the University of Tennessee Press. Currently, Zacharie serves as the Director of the Governor Frank G. Clement Railroad Hotel Musuem in Dickson, Tennessee.
