Have you managed to create a new “platform as a product” in your organization? Do you do actual discovery with your internal users? Do you communicate clearly both improvements and failures of the platform? Are you tracking and sharing metrics and stories on adoption, user satisfaction, and cognitive load reduction? Congrats, we wouldn’t be here without your amazing work! As the approach sticks, however, more and more organizations are struggling to scale the platform as a product approach (or the “platform engineering model” if that tickles your fancy) effectively: 🔥Overly centralized platforms that end up unwittingly blocking customers 🔥Overly distributed platforms that are hard to find and leverage at scale 🔥Insufficient advisory/enabling work taking place 🔥Large monolithic platform teams/services 🔥Lack of visibility on platform ROI Unfortunately, there’s no other way around it: we need to continuously adapt and figure out what are the next bottlenecks and organizational challenges to fast flow, in particular as they relate to the use of internal platforms. Oh yes, and there’s that AI thing we need to leverage as well. Bryan Ross, Field CTO at Gitlab, has a great quote that illustrates this nicely: “As always, technology seems to play a small part in success - it's those able to navigate the human challenges that continue to grow and deliver value consistently” Join this talk to hear about proven patterns to deal with the challenges of platform growth at scale, such as heuristics on splitting monolithic platforms into coherent platform groupings, how to leverage both centralized and decentralized platforms (hint: each has its own strengths, it should not be a binary choice!), evolving platform boundaries over time so they continue accelerating rather than start blocking their customers, and how to keep a laser focus on business and flow metrics in your platforms!
