On February 19 2012, the Texas regional Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony awarded the Texas members of the Japanese American 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the Military Intelligence Service. On this day seventy years ago, February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 forcing the removal and confinement of over 110,000 Japanese Americans from the West Coast of the United States. Despite this, thousands of Americans of Japanese ancestry voluntarily enlisted in the US Army serving with distinction as infantryman and linguists in the European, Pacific, and China-Burma-India theaters of war. The 100th/442nd RCT today remains the most highly decorated unit for its size and length of service. In addition, the Military Intelligence Service was credited with shortening the war by two years and saving countless lives. Regardless of the brave and often heroic actions of these men, their contributions and experiences went largely unrecognized in the decades after World War II. In 2010, the United States took a great step towards ending this omission in history with the awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal to the Japanese American soldiers of World War II.
