Dr Dyann Ross is a social work educator, podcaster, author and commentator on public issues. In this video Dr Ross explains what anti-oppressive social work is, how it is different from conventional social work and some of the challenges that can arise from such an approach. Something more is asked of social workers who seek to be anti-oppressive. In part this involves a capacity to understand the contextual factors impacting a person's life we are working with. It also requires an ongoing willingness to critically reflect on our own practice and how we use power. Social workers first and foremost need to avoid harming others as they aim to help them. Some examples of Dr Ross's ideas and how she practices in an anti-oppressive way can be found in the following publications from Revolutionaries: Broken-heartedness: Towards love in professional practice, and The revolutionary social worker: The love ethic model.
