What is Pinot Blanc? Eric from Bottles http://www.bottlesfinewine.com a wine store in Providence, RI talks about Pinot Blanc. Pinot Blanc is a white wine grape, but it originally comes from Pinot Noir grapes. Pinot Noir will naturally and occasionally produce a vine which bears one cane which produces white fruit. This is where both Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris come from. Sometimes the cluster exhibits both Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc characteristics. Some grapes exhibit a half moon effect of 50% Gris and 50% Blanc. It is a true anomaly, a special occurrence. Originally from Alsace, which historically changed hands between France and Germany's border wars, the wine takes on characteristics of wine making from both countries. In Alsace, Germany, Italy and Hungary, the wine produced from this grape is a full bodied dry white wine, but in Germany and Austria they can be either dry or sweet. A close cousin of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc is made in wooden barrels, but in Alsace they are covered inside with a neutral enamel, so there is no contact with the wood. If you want something that fits with a large variety of foods, it's the ideal wine, especially for a hot summer day, plus it's not expensive. Most are around $14. The most pure Pinot Blanc should have a high acidity and impart flavors of floral, plumb, and mineral on the tongue. A chilled Pinot Blanc can really transport you to the location where it is from, predominantly European meadows of grass and flowers. A subtle and versatile dry wine, with the color of straw or yellow gold, the flavors coming forward are; citrus, melon, honeysuckle, and a bit of celery seed. Aromatic and floral, with hints of over ripe pear, peach or apricot, it's surprisingly a mildly sweet wine. Pinot Blanc goes well with soft cheese and baguette, spicy pork sausage and salad, chicken breast, pork chops, and seafood like marinated salmon. It has citrus and mineral aspects that also pairs well with white fish, and all kinds of poultry. It's perfect as an aperitif for horse devours or salad, because it tastes very fresh.
