Body Based Work I Arizona Trauma Institute I Somatic Exercises

Body based work is based on the concept that people experience the world not only through their thoughts and emotions but also simultaneously through their bodies. The idea is to focus in on integration as you work through the different types of your body. You are going to first address your thinking body and that is, what do you believe? The next part is your emotional body and that is going to be, what do you feel? Then the physical body, what do you sense? So as we go through the body based activities, try to attune to the thinking body, emotional body, and physical body. So your going to start by focusing on opening up your chest, because your chest is the area in your body you really need in order to do good breathing. The first step to this activity is spreading your arms out, like the wings of an eagle. Then push your arms back, as far as they can comfortably go. Now there might be an urge to put your head down, but you want to keep it up and held high as comfortable to you. Once your arms are as far out as they can go, take 3 deep breaths and then start to slowly bring your arms back into the center at your own pace. Your hands might meet pressed against each other, they might meet in a position that is pointed upwards, or outwards, whichever is comfortable for you. As you bring your arms into the middle, repeat slow breathes. Then gently let your arms fall, and check in with your body and see how it feels. Now you can repeat this exercise as many times as you would like, the key is to really slowly move out your arms, and find that comfortable spot where your chest feels completely open for breath.
