Explain the Rockwell hardness test and compare B-scale with C-scale Rockwell hardness test is performed when quick and direct reading is required. Indentor and the loads are smaller and therefore the resulting indentation on the specimen is smaller. In Rockwell hardness test, the hardness is determined by the depth of penetration of an indentor. This test has nine scales of hardness (A to H and K). but B and C are widely used. Specimen is placed upon the stage of the hardness testing machine. Hand wheel is turned, raising the test piece against the indentor till the needle on the dial reads zero. This applies a minor load. Further load called major load is then applied and removed, leaving only the major load. The depth of penetration related to the major load gives the hardness number. The hardness number is read directly on the dial of the instrument. Rockwell hardness is indicated by the number (units) and symbol (Rockwell scale) like 80RC 60RB If the number is higher, harder the material. B-scale is marked in red Uses a steel ball indentor Used for soft materials Minor load 10kgs Major load 90kgs RB = 130 - d/0.002 C-scale is marked in black Uses a diamond cone indentor with 120 apex angle Used for hard materials Minor load 10kgs Major load 140kgs RC = 100 - d/0.002 please LIKE, SHARE and SUBSCRIBE Other videos related to Engineering Materials BCC | Body Centred Cubic Structure | Engineering Materials (Material science) | Mechanical | Telugu • BCC | Body Centred Cubic Structure | ...
