Mozart— Sonata in B-Flat Major, K. 378 Brahms— Sonatensatz in C Minor, WoO2 Husband and wife duo Tatiana Dimitriades and Jonathan Bass begin our April program with Mozart’s infinitely charming Violin Sonata in B-flat. They then turn to the last movement of an unusual work composed jointly by Robert Schumann, his pupil Albert Dietrich, and Johannes Brahms (then 20 years old) as a gift for the great violinist Joseph Joachim. They titled it the F.A.E. Sonata – the letters of Joachim’s maxim ‘Frei, aber einsam’, meaning free, but lonely. Brahms’ movement for the sonata was later published separately as Sonatensatzand.
