This month, Derek C. Schuurman, Ph.D., spoke on AI and the Biblical Story: Thoughts from a Christian Computer Scientist. Many believe that AI could lead us toward some sort of paradise. A rival story suggests that the future doesn’t need us and that AI will ultimately threaten humanity. This talk explores a vision for AI informed by the Biblical story and how it can guide us toward more responsible technology. Despite being written during the bronze and iron ages, the Biblical narrative remains relevant with implications for AI in today's digital age. About our Speaker: Derek C. Schuurman worked as an electrical engineer designing embedded systems for several years and later completed a Ph.D. at McMaster University in the area of robotics and computer vision. He is currently professor of computer science at Calvin University. He was made a senior member of the IEEE, is a fellow of the American Scientific Affiliation, and an advisor for AI&Faith. He is a book review editor for the Journal Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith and has written about faith and technology issues in a variety of publications including monthly columns in Christian Courier and contributions to the Christian Scholars Review blog. He is the author of the book Shaping a Digital World: Faith, Culture and Computer Technology and co-author of the recent book A Christian Field Guide to Technology for Engineers and Designers, both published by InterVarsity Academic Press.
